1. Durga Khote - Farebi Jaal (1931)
Bollywood actresses’ debut after marriage trend dates way back to 1930s when Durga Khote debuted in a minor role in the 1931 silent film Farebi Jaal with a small role. She was in her teens when she married Vishwanath Khote, who died after ten years of marriage. Durga Khote had to take up acting to support her two sons and thus signed Farebi Jaal by the Prabhat Film Company, and followed it with Maya Machindra (1932). She graduated to play heroine in superhit films including Ayodhyecha Raja (1932), Amar Jyoti (1936), Charnon Ki Dasi (1941), Bharat Milap (1942), and Mughal-E-Azam (1960). She later appeared in supporting roles in memorable films such as Bawarchi (1972), Bobby (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Bidaai (1974) and Karz (1980).

2. Devika Rani - Karma (1933)
Another popular Bollywood actress who started her career after marriage was none other than the First Lady of Indian cinema, Devika Rani. Devika Rani married Himanshu Rai in 1929, who was the owner of Bombay Talkies production house. She produced her maiden film Prem Sanyas in 1925 and a few years later marked her acting debut in Karma (1933), Jeevan Naiya (1936), Janmabhoomi (1936), Achhut Kanya (1936), Izzat (1937), Savitri (1937), Nirmala (1938), Vachan (1938) and Anjan (1941). She retired in 1943 after appearing in Hamari Baat (1943) and produced her last film, which was Daag (1952). After Himanshu Rai’s death in 1940, Devika Rani married Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich in 1945.

3. Shobhana Samarth - Nigah-E-Nafrat (1935)
One of the most popular Bollywood divas of the 30s and 40s, Shobhana Samarth marked her acting debut after marriage. Born in 1916, Shobhana Samarth was married to actor-director Kumarsen Samarth in 1935, after which she debuted in Nigah-E-Nafrat, directed by Master Vinayak. Some of her notable films were Do Diwane (1936), Pati Patni (1939), Saubhagya (1940), Apni Nagariya (1940) and Bharat Milap (1942), which became her career-defining film. She played the female lead opposite some of the top heroes of her era, like Ashok Kumar, Prithviraj Kapoor, Prem Adib, Shahu Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Mahipal, Jairaj, etc. Her daughters, Nutan and Tanuja also went on to become actresses.

4. Nirupa Roy - Amar Raj (1946)
The ‘Queen of misery,’ Nirupa Roy, also joins the list of Bollywood actresses who entered films after marriage. Nirupa Roy married Kamal Roy in 1946 at the age of 15 and moved to Mumbai, where she responded to an advertisement in a Gujarati newspaper for actors. She made her acting debut in the Gujarati movie Ranakdevi in 1946 and subsequently in the same year in the Hindi film Amar Raj. She was popular for playing historical and mythological lead characters in films like Har Har Mahadev, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan, Ram Janma, Maya Machhindra, Shiv Shakti, Basant Panchami, Amar Singh Rathod, Razia Sultana, etc. She frequently co-starred with actors such as Trilok Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Balraj Sahni, and Ashok Kumar. Another actress who tied the knot before marking her debut in movies was none other than ‘Mahanayika’, Suchitra Sen, who acted as a female lead in Bengali as well as Hindi films. Suchitra Sen married Dibanath Sen, son of a wealthy industrialist, in 1947, at the age of 16, and thereafter marked her acting debut in Bengali films in 1953 with Saat Number Kayedi and Sharey Chuattor opposite Uttam Kumar. She debuted in Hindi films opposite Dilip Kumar in Bimal Roy’s Devdas (1955) and followed it up with popular films like Bambai Ka Babu (1960), Mamta (1966), and Aandhi (1975).

6. Rakhee Gulzar - Jeevan Mrityu (1970)
Talking about married Bollywood actresses’ debut and not mentioning Rakhee Gulzar will make this list incomplete. Rakhee, who primarily works in Hindi as well as Bengali films, was initially married to Ajay Biswas in 1963. The marriage was short-lived and they divorced in 1965 after which marked her debut in the Bengali film Badhu Bharan (1967) and Baghini (1968) before signing her first Hindi film opposite Dharmendra in Jeevan Mrityu in 1970. 7. Moushumi Chatterjee - Anuraag (1972)
Moushumi Chatterjee joins the list of Bollywood actresses who began acting after marriage. Soon after marking her acting debut in the superhit Bengali film Balika Badhu in 1967, she married Jayanta Mukherjee, the son of music director and singer Hemant Kumar Mukherjee. In 1972, she made her debut in Shakti Samanta’s Anuraag and later was paired with most of the popular 70s leading actors like Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra and Vinod Mehra. Dimple Kapadia was launched by Raj Kapoor opposite his son Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973). Before the release of the film, Dimple Kapadia married the 'then superstar' of Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna at the age of 16. Despite the super success of Bobby, she retired from acting and made a comeback in 1984 opposite Jeetendra in Zakhmi Sher and Manzil Manzil opposite Sunny Deol, respectively. She had already made her debut in 1968 in the Tamil film Jeevanaasam but rose to fame with her first Malayalam movie Chattakari (1974) which was later remade in Hindi as Julie, fetching her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress that year. Daughter of prominent actress Suchitra Sen, Moon Moon Sen married Bharat Dev Varma in 1978 at the age of 24. Post-marriage, she made her acting debut in the Bengali film Rajbadhu in 1982 and thereafter got her first break in Hindi as a female lead opposite Jackie Shroff in Andar Baahar (1984).
