One of the founding figures of Hindi Cinema was Prithviraj Kapoor, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1969 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1971 by the Government of India for his contributions towards Indian cinema. He started his acting career in the theatres. He appeared in few silent films before appearing in a supporting role in India’s first talkie Alam Ara (1931). His other successful movies include Vidyapati (1937), Sikandar (1941), Dahej (1950), Awaara (1951), Anand Math (1952), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). In 1944, he founded Prithvi Theatres, which staged memorable productions in India. In 1927, he married Ramsarni Kapoor and the couple had six children, including actors Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor. He was the first member of the famous Bollywood family – the Kapoor family.
