Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) is an independent woman who is recovering from a breakup when she meets Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor), an upcoming singer and musician in New York. Alizeh believes in friendship more than love while Ayan believes in love. Alizeh goes back to her former lover only to see Ayan heartbroken. Time passes when Ayan yet again meets Alizeh only to realize that she is suffering from cancer. They both live together until death comes their way.
