Dana Paani is an action crime drama. The movie follows the story of a taxi-driver named Satya Prakash Tripathi (Mithun Chakraborty), who is accused of brutally killing two women. Satya Prakash is arrested and will either face the death sentence or life-time in prison. The movie plays in flashback, narrated by Satya Prakash, following the important events of his life. He tells how he arrives to the city, how his sister is forced into prostitution due to circumstances and how he is estranged from his family and end up in jail.
