Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama that revolves around Gulshan Arora (Aamir Khan), who is an assistant basketball coach at the Delhi Sports Association. During a match at the National Basketball League, Gulshan gets into a fight with the head coach, Paswan (Deepraj Rana) and assaults him for which he is suspended. Upset by the decision he drinks a lot and while returning home bangs into a police vehicle. The judge, Anupama Mandal (Tarana Raja) penalises Gulshan and asks him to do community service, which is to coach a basketball team consisting of neurodivergent people, who are affected with Autism and Down Syndrome. He is not happy with the verdict to head a team of mental players but soon his outlook towards life and relationships changes including his relationship with his estranged wife, Suneeta (Genelia Deshmukh). What happens next forms the rest of the film.
