Taaqat is an action thriller drama. The movie follows the story of a young man named Shakti (Vinod Khanna), who helps the local police to catch a notorious dacoit named Bhavani Singh (Pran). Post this event, Shakti is approached by the Inspector General, who asks Shakti to join the police force and help the police to eliminate the terror from the region, which Shakti accepts. Kalavati, Shakti’s stepmother, wants him to get married to a wealthy girl, so as to get huge dowry; moreover, she does not care about his enmity with dreaded criminals, as Shakti’s death will help Kalavati to claim all the wealth for herself and her son Deepu. Against her step-mother’s wishes, Shakti gets married to a poor orphaned girl, Devi (Raakhee). However, Devi is abused by Kalavati and Deepu, when Shakti has gone away to serve his duty in the police force. One day, Deepu tries to molest Devi, but she manages to run away. Later, Devi realises that she is pregnant with Shakti’s child, but she doesn’t wish to return to her in-laws and get her and her child’s life in risk. Instead, she manages herself to take care of herself and her child. However, Shakti has no idea about his wife and newborn child, and the question remains, will he ever get to reunite with his love?
